I love the ensemble playing on this one. We did this in one take, then layered some pump organ and percussion after. Musically, I wrote this with the band in mind, a simple melody that they could run circles around. What beautiful circles they are too.
I didn’t write the lyrics until a few months later. I didn’t know what to write about, so I started asking questions…
Lyrics
You sit at your desk like your fatherwith poems he left far behind
before every book had been authored
before every pair had been rhymed
Your father was some kind of writer
lost in a tangle of lines
you called out his name, he said "right here"
but a question was all that you could find
Where did he go, where did he go?
Who saw him last?
Is life a rhetorical question?
All I can do is ask
Now darling now
you are a dancer
breaking my heart with ballet
and for this one song you're my answer
for surely comes a day where we will say
Where did it go, where did it go?
Oh it went by so fast
if love is a reciprocal test then
I just hope that we can pass
Older than spirit or conscience
something we've asked from the start
in spite of the promise of parting
a question that goes from heart to heart
How do you love? How do you, love?
Do it without any fear
oh is love just some mythical quest then?
I just want to be your hero
