This is the oldest song and the first recording that pretty much started the album. I wrote it around 1998, right when Elliott Smith’s “XO” album came out. It’s heavily inspired by his song “Bled White.”

Anyhow, my dad told me about a song writing contest and was urging me to enter it. I resisted for a few days, then decided to enter it… the night before the deadline. I remember it was the night before Halloween because I went to see a Tenacious D concert the next day. I stayed up all night recording and doing the best job I could. I reached a point where I was so tired that I couldn’t sing the high notes, so I asked my brother-in-law and sister to pinch-sing for me. That’s them singing the lyrics “supposed to be” and the “la-la-la-la’s” at the end!

Lyrics

At Ease
You just wanna be cradled
in a lullabye
like a baby
you cry and cry and cry
when your needs are denied

you wanna be babied
and be told it's alright
in denial
you cry and cry and cry
and hide behind a smile

oh and somewhere where you're
supposed to be
someone is fulfilling your destiny

I've seen it in dreams
where I'm supposed to be
and you're here with me
you put me at ease
yeah you put me at ease

Rock a bye baby
goes the lullabye
and the fable
turns out to be a lie
don't act so surprised
maybe
as you wave goodbye to the child
you try and try and try
to find a new disguise

Always somewhere
where you're supposed to be
always someone new
that you're supposed to please

I've seen it in dreams
where I'm supposed to be
and you're here with me
you put me at ease
yeah you put me at ease

Summer show in Pennsylvania would be awesome. I’m sure the Chameleon Club would hook you up or somewhere in Philly like Union Transfer or Electric Factory. Think about it.

This song is absolutely, positively amazing. so beautiful, soft and sensual. interestingly enough, “bled white” was stuck in my head for several days before i discovered your song. Right now, this one is my #1 fav. please consider coming to the east coast.
