A Visit with Auntie Climactic

Last week, a friend had mentioned in an email that there was an advance screening of “Feast of Love” tonight in the city, so I did a google search and sure enough- there it was. So I got some tickets, excited and curious of how they used my song in the film. I barely slept the night before because of the buildup in my mind… I woke up pretty spacey today.

Unfortunately, though I allowed myself 2 hours to get to there on time, I still got stuck in rush hour traffic. Add the fact that the theater was in the heart of union square and you got yourself a late and spacey Goh. I usually avoid that place like the plague … tonight was a good reminder why. Needless to say, I didn’t know my way around that area as well as I should and I ended up getting stuck on Market Street for like 30 minutes trying to move 2 blocks just to make a right hand turn to get into a parking garage. I missed the first 15 minutes or so of the movie because of the parking situation, and then an additional 10 minutes because the theater was on the 5th floor and I was waiting for an elevator that never seemed to come. Once inside the elevator, I saw that it only went to the 4th floor… so I lept out of the elevator and flew up an escalator to the theater. I must’ve looked deranged because I forgot to wear a belt today and my pants were falling down… so here I am charging towards the theater with my hand on my ass and a frantic look on my face. My friend and fellow Invisible City bandmate Han was waiting patiently since 6:45- it was now 7:30 (I had 2 tickets at will call)

I managed my way into the theater and found a packed house- which seemed to be predominately middle aged women talking at the screen… maybe it’s my imagination, but that’s how I will remember it. My eyes adjusted to the dark and I found where my friends Bob and Sadie (also of the cities) were sitting. I sat for about 90 minutes with my ears peeled for my song to come on. Nothing. I figured one of my friends would say “oh- you missed it, it was in the first 20 minutes of the movie” but they didn’t. Hmm. The movie ended abruptly- for some reason they stopped it before the credits and turned on the lights. Sadie turned to me and said “I didn’t hear your song…”

It turns out the song was in the movie (Bob noticed it)- it’s really easy to miss because it’s playing in the background of a coffeeshop during some dialogue in the first 20 minutes, probably about a few minutes before I got inside the theater…

Oh well. I was bummed I missed the scene w/my song debut, but glad to see my name in the credits (which they rolled about 5 minutes after the majority of the theater emptied out). I was even gladder that they spelled my name right! No “Goth Nakamura” or some abomination of my name. *(EDIT 10/04: I saw the movie again, I actually made it in time- it was just playing so softly during the scene that I missed it!!! see above post!)

I have to admit, I was a bit down after the movie (the story is a bit of a downer) but the night made a turn for the better. After eating some tacos, I made the trek to the south bay and found that some of my friends were kara-oke-ing. I ended up getting treated to some old school Joe Jackson, Hall n’ Oates, and Wham! I even got to do a duet rendition of “It’s Tricky” by Run DMC. I think it’s the first time I’ve really tried to Rap.

The End.
