Current listening list

For songwriting, I’ve been listening to the albums “Broke Down” by Slaid Cleaves and the classic “Nebraska” by Bruce Springsteen. Man, what amazing storytellers! Some of the Springsteen songs remind me of Raymond Carver short stories…

Vocalwise, I’ve been listening to a lot of Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Lady day and Sassy… It’s impressive and inspiring to realize how many songs they made famous because of their artistry/ interpretation.

On the guitar front, I’ve been totally immersed in the strange and beautiful world of Kurt Rosenwinkel. I’ve heard about this guy for years, but just recently started listening (very very carefully) to him. There’s a spiritual depth to his music, it’s like he is singing in the language of dreams. I don’t know what it is, but something bypasses my brain and goes directly to my soul when I hear him play. It’s probably not worth the try to put it into words, and that is why I will stop trying. now.

I love Rosenwinkel–at least his album “The Next Step”. Haven’t heard his latest yet, but from the press release it sounds terrific.
