Cuss-tody Battle
Sunday June 27th 2004, 10:18 pm
I am currently in talks/negotiations with the Muse and the voices in my head regarding custody of my next batch of songs. I have a few “temporarily old school future classics” brewing in the tunehouse- they just need some lyrics and some…uh…substance. Don’t worry- the songs will come, on their own time… I’m not giving up.
I had a nice day passing the time at the Super7 store in J-town… lots of cool stuff- toys, books, shirts, artworks.
While I was there, I saw the new issue of Broken Umbrella- a ‘zine run by the wonderful Tony Vadakan. I’m in the “bedroom rockers” section of it- short interview and plus on 2 tracks of the included CD.
Next gig: Ireland’s 32 this Tuesday 9:30-? the 29th
oh yeah- go see the latest Michael Moore film… disturbing but essential

Playing a gig next Staurday night (6/12) at Rickshaw Stop 155 Fell Street
I’v been recruited as the opening act for
Wisely(on a west coast tour) and
Whitey on the Moon (local guys I believe)
I downloaded some stuff from both acts and dug what I heard.
So come on out cuz it’s cheap - $6 Door and I have a feeling that I will have to rock a little harder since I am the opening act!
I go on at 9:30
I played this place before, it’s a pretty neat venue- it used to be a TV studio so it is a good sounding room… lots of nooks and crannies to hang out in (plus foozball and a few rickshaws!)
Hope to see ya!

What I’ve been listening to lately:
Bill Frisell w/Elvin Jones and Dave Holland
Ron Sexsmith: Retriever
Stevie Wonder: Innervisions
I’ve been thinking about doing away with the technology lately- go back to the basics.
just me and an acoustic guitar…
kind of a drag to lug all that equipment around (p.a.,too many pedals, 3 loopers, effects, extra mic) and not have it work properly!
Or to play in a place where the audience is so loud that it ends up bleeding into the loops.
Some family members don’t like the looping at all- they say it’s a crutch, and to an extent it’s true. Playing alone acoustically is terrifying sometimes… it makes you feel so small and vulnerable. But maybe that is my natural sound- meek.
On one hand, the looping (when it works) lets me represent what I do at home… fleshes out the songs and takes them to places I couldn’t get to on my own.
on the other hand, is a voice inside saying-
“You’re being lazy. You should work harder on the arrangements and really work on becoming a better guitarist. Don’t rely on a pedal to play your basslines/chords/harmony for you. Figure out a way to pull it off and you will grow stronger.”
(this is due to being graced by the live performances of Bill Frisell, Ron Sexsmith, Sarah Harmer and Sondre Lerche in one month!)
HopefullyGodsWillingMaybe I can find some kind of balance.
p.s. I added some lyrics in the “words” section
Love,
